IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) Courses

Some moms asked about the IGETC courses in our previous chai. You can get your IGTEC while in high school, if you wish to. But remember that you need to complete ALL the requirements as some UCs accept partial igetc but some like UC Berkeley will not accept partial IGETC. You can get your IGTEC in high school but usually this will be a challenge unless you are currently enrolled in a dual-enrollment high school (a high school designed to let students take community college courses simultaneously). If not, you would have to somehow find a way to take those classes on top of a normal high school schedule. This is definitely possible, but not easy to manage. Assuming you are in a dual-enrollment high school, it will be easier. So long as you map your schedule well enough to ensure you fulfill all your requirements, and send the certificate once you finish, you'll get an IGETC.

IGETC is a general education pattern that fulfills the lower-division general education requirements for most UCs and all CSU campuses. California high school students are not required to pay tuition at community colleges when they go through a Dual Enrollment program as long as they enroll in less than 12 units a semester. IGETC is also accepted by some private/independent and out-of-state universities. But as always, we suggest you first check with a counselor in your high school.

We have a list of community colleges with their link to the IGETC courses. Given summer is coming up and you might be thinking of Summer classes and also of dual enrollment in the next academic year, we thought this list could be useful for you if you are interested in dual enrollment.

Please send an email to us chaiwithmoms@gmail.com if interested and we will send you the list
